As a huge fan of the Watchmen comics/film, I had to pick up a copy of the Special Edition Director’s Cut DVD. The Special Edition includes at least 24 more minutes of footage than the original, a documentary on the impact of the comics, all 11 video journals from the production of the film, a digital copy of the film, and last, but certainly least, a My Chemical Romance music video. I loved the film and was excited to bring it home and check out the special features.
It was much to my dismay when I opened the box to find a big “10 dollars off the super mega ultimate edition coming out in December”. While I appreciate the gesture, it did feel like a giant middle finger. While some of the special features included are interesting, and it will certainly be nice to have a digital copy to put on my iPod, I think the hardcore Watchmen fans may want to hold out until December to get the REAL package. The Ultimate Collector’s Package will include the Black Freighter woven into the film, 2+ hours of addtional content including Hollis Mason’s Under the Hood, and the complete Watchmen motion comics.

Yeah, they announced they’d be doing this awhile ago in hopes that the director’s cut would have a limited re-showing in theaters between DVD releases.
Although I’m looking forward to collector’s edition, I’m mildly scared of the price of the bluray version.
Oh god, Black Freighter AND Under the Hood? This is going on my Christmas list.
I picked up my copy at Borders, and the Blue-Ray version was only $5 more (I paid $24.95) than the DVD version. Not that big a difference, really.
I’m also going to have to get the Ultimate Special Bend-Over-And-Grab-Your-Ankles version, just because I love Watchmen. The graphic novel is better, but the movie is still quite good.
