Trine Demo Impressions

Incoming Pontius

I got my virtual hands on the PC demo of Frozenbyte’s new co-op game Trine. I have to say I was blown away.

Trine is a physics-based action game where three characters use and share their abilities to solve the various challenges created by enemies and the environment.  In doing so, they strive to ultimately save the world from the magic that has corrupted it.

In Trine you take control of the three heroes: the thief Zoya, the wizard Amadeus, and the knight Pontius.

Trine_Zoya

The thief, being the agile one of the three, uses a grappling hook to swing around and reach high places. Her weapon of choice is the bow, which is great for picking off pesky archers or even enemies running straight at you. I personally used her more when I was just trying to move through the levels. Besides, it was fun to swing around like crazy.

Amadeus

The womanizing wizard is, of course, the magical one. Although he is not that great of a magician at the start, he has some handy skills. His main ability is to levitate objects on the screen; like a box, parts of a bridge, and some ledges. Hell, anything that isn’t tied down, dead, or undead can be the wizard’s pawn for levitation. Another great thing he can do is conjure objects, such as boxes or platforms. Although he cannot directly attack, he can drop things that he has conjured on top of his enemies to kill them. When the thief and knight die leaving the wizard by himself, it can be scary. However, I was able to come through with him every time, even with a dozen undead surrounding him.

Pontius

And last but not least, we have the wanna-be knight. He is the muscle of the group, for he has the ability to fend off foes with brute force. In both single-player and multi-player, he is quite simply a meat shield. He also has the ability to lift and throw boxes, which can be used to progress further into each level when necessary.

Currently, the only downside is that the game can only be played co-op locally. Hopefully some day, they will make it online co-op. Other than that, this game is fun, innovative, and gorgeous. It has what it takes to be the next Braid… well, besides the $30 price tag on the PC. On the PSN, it will be $20. Good news for those with a PS3; not so good news for me. Oh well. I will still be getting it.

Trine is up for download on PC and will be availabe on the PSN at a later date. Go forth and hack, slash, generate, levitate, shoot, and swing your way to victory against a magically corrupted world!
