What’s your geekspective? – Achievements

<insert achievement unlocked sound here>

Like them or not, the concept of the “achievement” has revolutionized how we, as gamers, play games and how developers make games.

What do you think about achievements?

Be it on the Xbox 360, Steam, PS3, or any other form of media, we’ve all been affected by these innate things in some way or another in recent years. Although the number doesn’t even mean anything, there’s just something fascinating about watching your gamerscore go up bit by bit.

I’ve even found myself often taking a look at the achievements in a game when considering whether or not to buy it. For me, they’ve at times even been a deciding factor in said purchase.

In a lot of ways, achievements have driven me to become a better gamer. I’ve always been a fan of extra little hidden challenges in games, and all that achievements have done is to make those challenges a little more available.

For me, they’ve done little but increase the replay value of my games and thus their cash value as well.

So, what’s your geekspective?

    Achievements don’t really add to my experience at all. Usually I find it more entertaining to do ridiculous challenges like Ocarina of Time with 3 hearts rather than “find an object placed in this game which you can look online to find” or “Use one attack a lot so you can get a weapon. Then upon getting it everyone will hate you and assume you’re cheap.” and some achievements aren’t even that reward worthy, “Play through the first level”

    At least it’s better than getting messages about recon armor.

    I agree for the most part. It’s not that I don’t like getting achievements; I just don’t care if I get them because getting them is not why I play games. Besides, when I show off I usually post it on youtube ROFL.

    I used to be all about the achievements but then one day I just stopped caring about them. Starting that day I could play any console guilt free that I wasn’t getting GP. Now the 360 does not own my life, I can embrace the PS3, Wii, and all my old consoles.

    I really like getting achievements.. over the summer I decided that I was going to work on my achievements and get my score up, but then I realized that I have a lot of other stuff going on in my life aside from video games, that I have to do or just like doing better. So, achievements are cool when I get them (both on the 360 and Steam) but since I don’t play video games as often as I do other things (knitting, board games, tabletops, oh and work and school I guess) they aren’t as big of a deal to me.

    I am impressed by big gamerscores, though, like yours, Cole, and Dylan’s, hahaha.

  5. My large gamer score generally just reflects my longer stint on XBox live. I mean, I’ve had a 360 for around 3 years now, and with my score of what…25000, that’s a little over 8000 points a year, which is comparable to completely clearing 8 games a year. I’m sure that’s a rate which countless others have put to shame, but I’m not too worried. I like to get whatever I can when I rent a game, but I’m not going to go out of my way to complete every single side mission in Wheelman just to get a few hundred extra points. Games like Dead Space, however, I do enjoy having achievements for because it gives me a reason to go back and appreciate a masterpiece after I may have otherwise already felt like I had completed it. So, thank you achievements. I love you.
