I figured since we have included Scott Pilgrim in our comics category bar, why not post something related to the source material.
Because the sixth and final book of the trade paperback series has not been finished, the only related news is the movie adaptation that started filming earlier this year. Starring Michael Cera (Juno, Arrested Development) as the titular character, Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World follows the same premise as the books: a 24-year-old, Canadian, wanna-be rockstar finds himself in love with an American delivery girl. However, he quickly finds out that in order to stay with her, he must defeat her seven evil exes.
The books so far are fantastic. They are very simple to read and basically geared towards ADD-inflicted persons; the books are littered with short gags and one-page events that are strung together to make a running narrative. However, the complexity of the jokes and references reaches for the boundaries of pop culture while firmly declaring its place in geekdom.
The setting is within a modern-day world of fantasy where mystical powers and subspace portals are not only possible but seemingly common. The storyline of Scott’s struggle to be with Ramona and the ripples it causes through their friends (past and present) are what hold everything together. And although most are slightly caricature, the characters come off as sincere in their efforts, each with their own quirks and place in the narrative.
All-in-all, this is great read, even for those who don’t like comics. Which is why I’m pumped for the movie. The source material is perfect, and the film itself is shaping up to follow suit. With a director like Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, Spaced) and the actors they’ve cast, I can’t help but have high hopes. Add that to the video blogs that are being released, and it’s looking even better.
Below is the latest video blog that was released Wednesday. It chronicles some behind-the-scenes shots/interviews of a gig from a rival band of Scott’s (on more than one level). The amount of detail they’ve added to the sets and props is almost Watchmen-like. You can see all the video blogs at Vimeo, even in HD! I know how you kiddies like your high-definition moving pictures.
