Comics

Seemingly running in the shadow of next summer’s Iron Man 2, there are a few comic book movie adaptations that aren’t that well-known (or even heard of, for that matter). Matthew Vaughn’s version of Mark Millar’s Kick-Ass is one of said films. Besides some great buzz from the graphic footage shown during this year’s Comic-Con, generally no mainstream media has been revealed except for some posters.
Now, we’re getting a good stream of video, most recently a character trailer for Hit-Girl, a prepubescent storm of killing potential. Millar’s books are conceptually a “What if?” scenario where an everyday high schooler dresses up, calls himself Kick-Ass, and tries to be a superhero (think Batman without money, gadgetry, or basically any sort of fighting skills). Hit-Girl, on the other hand, is definitely a person he wants on his side. You’ll see why.
Catch the character trailer (I can’t stress the NSFW enough) and some older clips after the jump.

Following in the success of iTunes’ Watchmen Motion Comic, it appears Hulu will be releasing at least the first arc of Joss Whedon’s run on the Astonishing X-Men in the same manner. The “Gifted” arc, which haphazardly was chopped up and mixed into the X3 movie, introduces a ‘cure’ for mutation. But at least with this, you may actually care about what happens.
This is probably the best I’ve seen done with the motion comic concept. Everything is pretty fluid, even with the 3d effect being a tad jarring.
Hit the jump for the first chapter.

Yoshito Usui was found dead at the foot of a cliff near the Gunma prefecture’s Mount Arafune. He was a 51 years young.
Usui was most famous for creating the manga Crayon Shin-chan, a weekly serial published in Weekly Manga Action. First debuting in 1990, the series follows the comedic adventures of five-year-old Shinnosuke “Shin” Nohara and his family, friends and neighbors. The manga and its 1992 anime adaptation have been regarded by some as Japan’s equivalent to The Simpsons, and is popular worldwide, aired in Spain, the US, Indonesia, Korea, the Philippines, Poland, Vietnam and other countries.
At the moment it is not clear what will happen to the future of the series. Hopefully it will continue on in some fashion. Even so I will surely miss Usui’s work.

With Disney’s gnarled, twisted claw firmly gripped around Marvel’s essence, the internet is awash with visions of future IP match-ups to come. So, for today’s battle I will cover a redundancy formerly covered by Penny Arcade. Both Beast and THE Beast are incredibly strong and agile, as well as very cultured individuals. While one spends most of his time with a bunch of mutants, the other can call upon the assistance of every single piece of furniture in his house. As always, leave comments on your pick for victor, the more creative the better.

Ben Grimm and Bruce Banner both got the short end of the superhero stick. Ben Grimm will never lead a normal life, forever doomed to the life of an orange igneous rock creature. Bruce Banner is no better, daring not to go outside for fear of receiving a parking ticket and knocking a meter maid across three city blocks as The Hulk. Both having their powers fueled by anger, who do you, the community, choose as THE most rage in the cage?
Having fully completed the storyline and Riddler challenges, I feel comfortable expounding on my previous statements regarding the newest Batman title by Rocksteady Games. All over the internet, the opinion seems to be uniform that this game is nothing short of immaculate. Hit the bump to find out whether or not we agree.

If you would pardon my simile, a good author is much like a gardener. As he tells his story, he slowly and with great care plants the seeds which will one day grow into a tall and wondrous tale.
Patrick Rothfuss is one of the greatest “gardeners” I’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting, and his garden, The Kingkiller Chronicle has had its seeds well sown with his first book in the presumed trilogy, The Name of the Wind.

Finally, NIS America has a Twitter! To make this news even sweeter, they are thinking about implementing exclusive Twitter giveaways and contests.
NIS America is, of course, the Japanese counterpart of Nippon Ichi Software. They love bringing Japanese pop culture over to America. However instead of releasing a new video game, they are bringing a picture book to the US.
“Tsubame the Ninja is a story about a ninja boy, Tsubame. He is an ordinary elementary school student during the day, but at night he and his family turn into Ninjas! The story follows his life and the Ninja Olympics, which Tsumabe enters.”
It is a hardcover book which will be shipped out mid-September. Pre-order it at the Rosenqueen store.
In honor of Batman: Arkham Asylum, I thought I’d pick two of the greatest villians from the mythos. While there are enough great Batman villians to provide throwdown fodder for months, I decided that these two would be a close enough match-up to make things interesting. Feel free to grace us with your comments on the victor, community.

In the realm of comics, there are often heroes from DC and Marvel that bare some similarities. However, in my opinion, never before have two heroes from opposing comic factions been so similar in design and concept.

I’ve been a huge fan of tabletop games, Dungeons & Dragons in particular, for the better part of my life. Most of the time, I’m right there with the majority in that I really don’t like people going in and mucking about with rules when everything is already oh so good.
But then, at GenCon, I played Pathfinder from Paizo Publishing LLC for the first time with the newly released and completed core ruleset, and I absolutely fell in love.
This is what D&D was meant to be.
