Dungeons & Dragons Still Banned in Prison

Early this week, the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit rejected the claims in a lawsuit that challenged a ban on Dungeons and Dragons by the Waupun Correctional Institution in Wisconsin.

The law suit was brought by prisoner Kevin T. Singer, arguing that the First and 14th amendment were violated by the prison’s decision to ban DnD. With the decision also came the confiscation of his books, a 96-page manuscript he wrote, and additional materials.

New & Improved Dungeons and Dragons on Window’s Surface

With the fall semester being over, new updates come from the awesome DnD Surface team from Carnegie Mellon. At the beginning of the semester, they showed proof of concept of playing DnD on Window’s Surface. Now, they are showing some awesome progress, from accurate line of sight to a grid system that shows what can be done in a move action all the way up to full round action. We can only hope they continue improving the system next semester. Hopefully by the time they finish, I’ll have had saved up $13,000 to buy a Window’s Surface.

Dungeons and Dragons Played on Window’s Surface

I love DnD, I love computers, and now, behold the perfect marriage of both. This looks to definitely help the whole experience of DMing. I really hope this project goes somewhere, and someday I will be able to have my own computer table awesomeness. You can check out how all this came to be and where it is going here.

What’s your geekspective? – Board Games

Dayton 500: The Board Game? Really?

“The best four days in gaming.”

That’s how they refer to Gen Con, but why? If you look at and compare all of the events at the convention, you’ll find that only 5% (at most) of the show is dedicated to video games.

Board games are the true stars. Let’s put the term “gaming” back in its rightful place.

What’s your favorite board game?

Pathfinder – My New Path

DRAGON SMASH!

I’ve been a huge fan of tabletop games, Dungeons & Dragons in particular, for the better part of my life. Most of the time, I’m right there with the majority in that I really don’t like people going in and mucking about with rules when everything is already oh so good.

But then, at GenCon, I played Pathfinder from Paizo Publishing LLC for the first time with the newly released and completed core ruleset, and I absolutely fell in love.

This is what D&D was meant to be.

Corporate Takeovers for the Rest of Us

While at GenCon this weekend, the good people over at Corporate Espionage gave a tutorial of their card game and some free decks to those in attendance. Being the broke bloggers that we are, Tim Burke and I  jumped on the chance and gave the game a shot. The product that we demoed, and the culture being built around it, got me more excited/interested than just about anything else during the best four days in gaming. Check out more on this intriguing new card game after the bump.

A Game of A Game of Thrones: The Card Game

It's alive!

Who doesn’t love a  good card game? I know I do!

Today at Gen Con I met up with a representative for Fantasy Flight Games to sit down to enjoy a demo of the relatively new Living Card Game (LCG) A Game of Thrones: The Card Game based on the writings of George R. R. Martin.

Herobits More Than Just a Bit of Fun

While at Gen Con, one of the main draws for me is demoing new products that are new to the market or soon to hit retail. One of the games that struck a particularly harmoneous chord with me was Herobits. Herobits is a non-tradeable card game which seeks to provide simple, yet enjoyable play that is accessible for anyone of almost any age.

Artwork of Ulrika Vidar, one of the heroes of Herobits. Continue Reading…

Gen Con – Day 1 Photos

Day 1 of Gen Con saw the opening ceremonies with Tracy Hickman and Peter Adkison plugging the XTreme GM Handbook, holding a moment of silence for our departed comrades, and tossing the first die roll of the convention. We walked the floor a bit and managed to take a few pictures of some of the displays, but this personally being my first time here, I was a bit overwhelmed and took far less shots than I intended. At least there are 3 more days to make up for it. Anyway, without further ado, the first shots of Gen Con, after the bump. Continue Reading…

Chaos Marauders Marching Toward GenCon

Rawr!

A few days ago Fantasy Flight Games, publisher of popular board games such as Talisman, made a surprise announcement. They will be releasing a remake of the classic card game Chaos Marauders.

Originally released in 1987 by Games Workshop (creators of the Warhammer series) Chaos Marauders gained something of a cult following of players for its fast, frenzied gameplay, but never really caught on with the general gaming public.

Fantasy Flight Games hopes to change that.

World of Warcraft TCG, He-man, and Skeletor…

heman

Anyone who has played WoW knows that Blizzard likes to reference other parts of geek culture, and it seems that the WoW:TCG is no different. The cards you see above are now available for play in the TCG. I do not know how far Blizzard can push the envelope until they have a lawyer knocking at their door, but those tight looking pictures look awfully familiar.  Using Skeletor’s old name Keldor does not help. I find it kind of funny that these cards are “Unique.”

Thanks mykalgaidin!
